About the tour

Trees have fascinated us humans since time immemorial – but equally, trees and forests accompany our history and development. It is likely to fulfil a need of the people of our time: to learn more about the trees around us and our subtle connections to them, based on millennia of lore and tradition:

…Tacitus, Roman historian and senator, in his “Germania” perceives the great country as “so shapeless in its landscapes” and “eerie through its primeval forests or ugly through its moors”… …
with the emergence of landed property, people in the Middle Ages made use of “…living boundary stones…”. .
..impoverished households were described “with foliage onder, with foliage ober”…

…due to increasingly empty state coffers, the luxurious par force hunt was replaced by the “German” or “employed” hunt and hunt front…
…wealthy Dutch trading companies organised the transport of huge rafts – not tied together with straw ropes…
…even in proverbs one discovers assumptions about the similarity between man and tree. Can’t humans be just as strong and sturdy, rooted, uprooted and “carved from good wood” or “she/he is made of the right stuff”?

…until the seventies of the 19th century, the Christmas tree was only common in Germany in higher social circles…

Discover the history of the trees on our hike – they whisper and rustle their memoirs!
